CERN – How Cool?!

Google+ Hangout

In this special #DeSTEMber hangout, we take a look at – quite literally – one of the “coolest” parts of CERN.

In the CERN cryogenics laboratory, experts work with liquid nitrogen and liquid helium to cool CERN equipment to temperatures as low as -271°C (about -456°F or 2.15 Kelvin). This temperature is even colder than outer space!

In this hangout, our experts perform hands-on experiments to show the weird and wonderful world of liquid nitrogen, and explain why we need to keep parts of CERN so cold.

Watch live on http://youtube.com/CERNTV at 10am CST!

Google Science Fair Wednesday

Google+ Hangout with 2011 Finalist Skanda Koppula

Without force, electricity, and magnetism, we would literally be in the dark and the everyday gadgets, appliances, motors (and the list goes on) would not simply not function. We use these indispensable forces every day, but how do they each work? And more importantly, how are they connected to one another?

Join Google Science Fair 2011 Finalist and senior at Phillips Academy Andover – Skanda Koppula – as he dives into “the force” of electricity and magnetism. He will be demonstrating the interconnection between these forces. Using these household items (a wire, a magnet and a light bulb) he will test some of the theories principles governing the connection.

Bring your questions and curiosity to follow along with Skanda and the other #deSTEMber participants at 10 AM PST / 12PM CST / 1 PM EST.
