After School Spring 2018: Week 9

This week, Girlstart After School explored the impact of humans on ecosystems. After a mini lesson on food webs and energy flow diagrams, girls predicted the influence of humans on various ecosystems. Then, they built and tested a pipeline to transport oil from one location to another. They wrapped up the activity with a discussion on building environment-friendly structures.

2018 Girls in STEM Conference

On March 24th, Travis High School hosted Girlstart’s ‘Girls in STEM Conference.’ Every year, volunteers, presenters, and students come together to engage in fun-filled science activities. This year was no different- girls spent the day participating in workshops with an emphasis on science, technology, and teamwork! This year Girlstart hosted its largest conference yet with 650+ girls!

Girlstart hosts the ‘Girls in STEM Conference’ each year to promote exploration of STEM careers. The conference is open to 4th-8th grade girls and includes workshops led by women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields.

After School Spring 2018: Week 8

Girlstart After School is back and ready to go after Spring Break! This week, our girls built and attached wind turbines to toy cars to create wind-powered vehicles. As part of the design process, they systematically tested and made modifications to their turbine. Then, they compared their results to see which cars traveled the fastest!
