#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of May 11

This week, Girlstart is focusing on #computerscience. We are kicking off the week with a STEM #Challenge focused on Video Game Designers. Video Game Designers use computer programming to create the fun games you play each day, but before they create video games, they have to create a plan for the game. Use materials around your house to create a game that you can play at home. Be sure to include rules, a goal, character, and add in some challenge to your game. Post on social and #GirlstartSTEMChallenge to show off your video game prototype!

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of May 4

A prosthetic is a medical device that is designed to replace a limb that may be missing or have been surgically removed due to a disease or traumatic event. You may have heard of humans using prosthetics, but did you know that animals can use prosthetics too? Biomedical Engineers work to create prosthetics that not only work, but are also comfortable for their patients, and you too can create a prosthetic prototype at home! Using materials around your house, Girltart’s #STEM Challenge is to create a prosthetic prototype for your favorite animal – that may be a bird that’s missing a beak, a dog that’s missing a leg, or even a dolphin that needs a new tail! Share your prototype creations on social and #girlstartstemchallenge! #girlstart #dolphintale #winter @hangernews

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of April 27

Manufacturing #engineers design packing materials so we can ship delicate objects long distances without them breaking. During this week’s Girlstart #STEM Challenge, grab a chip, to represent your breakable object, then use materials from around your house to hold, protect, or slow the fall if your package drops. The goal is to drop your packaged chip from shoulder height and for your chip not to break. Don’t forget to post on social and #girlstartstemchallenge to show off your packaging prototype! #girlstart

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of April 20

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, an annual celebration focused on building an environmental movement to drive positive action for our planet, Girlstart is taking the week to do all things ‘Green’. Girlstart’s #STEM Challenge this week is to engineer a device to help clean up trash more efficiently. For an extra challenge, use things around your house that you no longer need or might otherwise throw away – this is called upcycling! Share your creations on social and #girlstartstemchallenge! #girlstart #earthday @earthdaynetwork

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of April 13

For this week’s Girlstart #STEM challenge you will need some paper, a straw (if you have one), and tape to create paper rockets! Just like when aerospace engineers design rockets they test different designs to see which can go higher, farther, or faster. What design(s) did you like the best? Don’t forget to post on social and #girlstartstemchallenge to show your rocket in action!  #girlstart

Hint: If you need additional ideas, search for the paper rocket daily activity! #stemathome

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of April 6

From the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge to London’s Tower Bridge to Austin’s Pennybacker Bridge, there are many famous bridges around the world. This week’s #STEM Challenge is to grab some household materials and design a bridge that can hold 50 pennies, a book, or even your shoe! Post on social and #girlstartstemchallenge to show off how much weight your bridge can hold. #girlstart

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of March 30

Our 2nd #STEM Challenge is to use your #engineering skills to create a prototype to make your own kitchen utensil. Think about what you want your utensil to do, how will it work, etc. Remember to post your creation on social, #girlstartstemchallenge and tag a few friends to encourage them to be creative as well. #girlstart

#GirlstartSTEMChallenge Week of March 23

The STEM Challenge for this week is to create a device to launch a marshmallow/cotton ball/ping pong ball/whatever you can find across the room (be careful of your TV!).
