Celebrate Spring Break at Discovery Green with five fun-packed days for the whole family. Girlstart’s Discovery Green Spring Break initiative includes fun hands-on STEM activities that foster general awareness about STEM and encourage children and families to recognize that ‘STEM is everywhere.’
Check out the schedule for Girlstart’s activities:
Monday, March 11th
Cookie Mining: Rocks that contain large amounts of minerals are called mineral deposits. Using yummy chewy chocolate chip cookies, practice your mining skills and calculate if mining for chocolate chip “mineral deposits” is worth the cost to the environment.
Pop Fly Catapults: Experiment with levers to create your own catapult that will launch an object across the room! Test and revise your design to maximize the distance your object can fly.
Tuesday, March 12th
Slime: Do you love to play with gooey slime? Create your very own slime with just a few ingredients. The slime goo, called polyvinyl alcohol, is a liquid polymer and when you add the cross-linker solution, or sodium tetraborate, it links the long strands of polyvinyl alcohol molecules so when you pull out one polyvinyl alcohol chain, all the rest comes with it in a blob!
Stomp Rockets: How do rockets fly? And how do engineers design them to know which direction they will travel? Design your own rocket, launch it, and test the best ways to keep it in the air.
Wednesday, March 13th
Apollo Mission: On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 astronauts first walked on the moon. Celebrate the 50 year anniversary of this pivotal moment in space exploration by discovering the science behind our moon and solar system.
Pinwheels: Explore where wind comes from and how it affects Earth as you create your own pinwheel. Use your knowledge of wind speed and direction to make your pinwheel spin as fast as possible!
Thursday, March 14th
LED Bracelets: Explore circuits and electrical energy while creating your own stylish bracelet! Design your charm, then add an LED light powered by a coin cell battery to make your bracelet light up.
Straw Kazoos: Kazoos make a crazy sound that can be really fun or really annoying (depending on if your making the sound or listening to the kazoo). Design your own kazoo and discover the unique pitches you can create with just a few cuts.
Friday, March 15th
Bee Hummers: Time to put your acoustical engineering skills to the test! Explore sound waves to created the sound effect of a swarm of bees using a stick, rubber band, index card, string, and eraser.
Insta-Snow®: Have you ever wanted to play with fluffy snow even though it’s warm outside? Snow is only created during freezing temperatures, but now you can create and play with your own Insta-Snow® and watch it fall to the ground before your eyes no matter how hot it is outside!
