Starry Nights Spring 2019

Girls sat on knitted bean bag chairs lining the inside of the Girlstart planetarium. Ten eager faces looked up at the STEM crew as they anticipated what would happen next. Then, the space plummeted into darkness as the STEM CREW closed the door to the planetarium. A moment later, the ceiling came to life with images of Mayan constellations. The dome filled with oohs and ahhs as girls and their parents learned about the Mayan skies.

Inside the STEM studio, kids of all ages made their way to the different stations. They made working circuits to light up their own version of ancient ceremonial masks and built replicas of Mayan pyramids with sugar cubes. They also learned about the adaptations of the Mayan stingless bee and explored ancient civilizations using virtual reality. MilliporeSigma even came out to amaze families with luminescent chemical reactions!

The room filled with smiles as parents watched their children explore STEM. That evening, the girls not only learned about Mayan civilizations and STEM, they also unlocked their potential to build, create, and learn using science, technology, engineering and math.

STEM Starry Nights are on the first Thursday of every month. Join us in April and May to experience STEM in action! The event is free and open to all ages. RSVP online here.

Hands-On Wednesday: Jumping Soda Can

Most people drink the occasional soda, but have you ever seen a soda can jump before? After you drink your next soda, place the empty can in a coffee mug, then blow into the space between the mug and can. The increase in air pressure between the two surfaces causes the soda can to jump out of the mug. Once you’ve mastered that, try setting up a second mug and see if you can get your can to jump from one mug to the other!
