Thank You Reliant

Reliant hosted their annual Reliant Gives Week the week of May 22nd. Girlstart hosted two volunteer group opportunities packed full of fun and productivity.

On May 23rd, a group of Reliant employees volunteered their time at our Houston office. They built bakers racks, tables, and filing cabinets to help with storage for our Houston program materials. We are so thankful for the increased storage as we continue to grow in the Houston community.

A second group of Reliant employees volunteered at their offices on May 24th. Over 40 volunteers joined us to prep materials for our Houston summer camps and after school programs. They assembled close to 200 engineering journals for girls and made name tags and certificates for our summer campers, as well as cut cardboard, aluminum foil, and more for our fall after school programs.

This volunteer work also coincided with a $10,000 donation from Reliant Gives to support Girlstart’s work in Houston.

Thanks to their efforts, we are now ready to jump in to another school year serving the Houston community with our programs!

Charles Schwab Volunteer Week

Charles Schwab hosted their annual Schwab Volunteer Week the week of May 22nd. Girlstart hosted two groups of volunteers and they were packed full of fun and productivity.

On May 23rd, a group of Schwab employees volunteered their time getting materials ready for our Summer Camp to-go programs. Volunteers assembled over 400 engineering journals for girls, assembled nametags, cut out cardboard for our Girlstart Galaxy camp, and so much more. We are thankful for all of their hard work getting us ready for our camps!

Girlstart hosted a second group of volunteers on May 24th at the Girlstart STEM Center. Over 20 volunteers joined us and helped get our building ready for the first group of campers. Volunteers painted our summer camp counselor room, set up two computer labs, power washed picnic tables, planted new flowers, filled bean bag chairs, and more. Volunteers worked tirelessly to cross off all of the items on the to-do list. Thanks to them we are now ready to host 14 weeks of camp at our facility!

Hands-On Wednesday: Paper Airplane Launcher

Need an extra lift for your paper airplane? Then put together this paper airplane launcher! As you pull the rubber band back farther, you build up more potential energy, which transfers to more kinetic energy when you launch your plane. All you need is a wooden board, two nails, a long rubber band, a paperclip, a hole punch, tape, and of course, your paper airplane!
