Meet Megan Proska, Senior Horticulture Manager at the Dallas Arboretum

Megan has always loved being outside, from an early age picking vegetables out of her mom’s garden, up to her job now as a Senior Horticulture Manager at the Dallas Arboretum. She started volunteering with the Botanical Research Institute of Texas in 6th grade and continues to volunteer with them when she can. A Texas A&M graduate with degrees in both Horticulture and Entomology, she continued to gain knowledge by being awarded a fellowship with Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom. After coming back to the States, she worked at a tree nursery before taking a supervisor position at the Dallas Arboretum. From there, she moved into manager positions for the Children’s Adventure Garden and then the Trials Gardens.

Working at the Arboretum, she has gained a vast amount of knowledge not only on plants, but also on insects and animals. Her daily tasks change depending on the season, weather, and what events are happening around the garden. She says, “You can always expect to learn something new every day when working here!”. One thing she really enjoys about her job is teaching people about how they can maintain their gardens at home. Education is a large portion of any sector of STEM and educating while out in the field is something she really likes to do.

North Texas is ideally situated for year-round gardening, but the addition of a cold frame can significantly improve your efforts. Explore a variety of options and design a cold frame of your choosing based on materials available and budget. It’s a great STEM challenge for you and your family!
