Hour of Code

December 9, 2020

Meet Sarika Sabnis!

Sarika graduated in 2019 from UT Austin with a bachelor’s in Linguistics and a minor in Computer Science. Sarika knew she wanted to pursue linguistics, the study of human language and communication, when she took an introductory class offered at her high school. In college, she learned to combine her passion for studying language with her interest in using computer science to analyze data for a field called computational linguistics. While learning how to program and code was initially difficult, Sarika owes her success to incredible mentors—both professors and peers—who encouraged her not to quit. It was through this lesson in perseverance that Sarika became interested in other computer science work! Currently, Sarika works at Dell Technologies as a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer. RPA is a growing tech field that helps automate a variety of repetitive computer-related tasks. Sarika hopes to experience many different roles during her time at Dell, including data analytics work and eventually language data analysis, and in the future, she plans to pursue a graduate degree in computational linguistics. In her free time, Sarika loves woodworking and DIY projects, as well as gardening, writing, and practicing other languages!

Participate in the Hour of Code™ 2020 with Girlstart as part of Computer Science Education Week! The Hour of Code™ is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.

First, watch this short video to learn more about the importance of computer science.

Next, spend an hour (or more!) learning to code with JavaScript and Python by playing a fun game called Ozaria! Enter the world of Ozaria where you become a hero in an epic adventure. You must use the power of coding to defeat a darkness that has taken over the world! Along the way, you’ll meet interesting characters and travel to different lands, practicing coding concepts like sequences, loops, debugging, and decomposition. In the end, you’ll design a playable game that you can share with your friends!
