Everything you see around you—stuff made by nature and stuff made by humans—is known as “materials.” The way that materials behave and interact, even at the scale of atoms and molecules that are too small for us to see, shape the way we live. The Franklin Institute, a science museum in Philadelphia, worked with Penn State University’s Center for Nanoscale Science to create Mission: Materials Science, a website for kids to learn how the science of materials can help us live smarter, healthier, or more environmentally friendly lives. Start your exploration with Color Control, an activity where you can experiment with a technique that’s helping materials scientists create simple medical tests that can be used all over the world.
