Sand Structures
If you’ve driven over a bridge lately, you’ve seen science and engineering at work. Not just in how the bridge is built, but also what it’s made of! The concrete used to make bridges is an example of a composite material—a mixture of two or more materials that, when combined, have properties that are unique to their individual parts.
In this activity from The Franklin Institute, a science museum in Philadelphia, and Penn State University’s Center for Nanoscale Science, try making your own composite materials to build different Sand Structures and test their strength.
