Hands-On Wednesday: Paper Chromatography

STEM Hands On

Paper Chromatography

In this activity, discover how black ink is made! Using a coffee filter, glass of water, and Crayola marker we can see that black ink is actually made up of many different colors. Because the ink in washable markers is made of pigment and water, the different colors of ink separate and allow us to see a beautiful array of colors. What color do you see the most of? What happens if you draw the line with a permanent marker, like a Sharpie?
