STEM Extravaganza
Kick off the school year with Girlstart’s Back to School STEM Extravaganza! Join us for free and exciting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) hands-on activities for all genders and ages at the Girlstart STEM Center in Austin, Texas.
Participants will get to experiment with simple machines and force by creating a catapult, learn about sound and vibrations while constructing a device that mimics a swarm of bees, launch rockets with a chemical reaction and more!
Activities include:
- Bracken Cave Preserve VR: Transport yourself to the home of the largest bat colony in the world with the help of Bat Conservation International and a VR headset!
- Catapults: Use levers and force to create a catapult that launches a ping pong ball!
- Kaleidoscope: Explore light, reflections, and symmetry with your very own kaleidoscope.
- Mission to Mars: Transform a robot into a rover that surveys conditions, collects samples, and navigates the terrain of the Red Planet.
- Paper Helicopter: Create a paper helicopter as you learn about the rotors that help it fly!
- Alka Seltzer Rockets: Explore the chemistry of carbon dioxide gas by using an Alka Seltzer tablet to fuel a film canister rocket! Design an aerodynamic rocket body and learn how Newton’s Third Law causes your spacecraft to soar into the air
- Bee Hummer: Bzzzzzz! Discover the science behind sounds as you engineer a device that creates air vibrations that sound like a swarm of bees.
- Star shows: Enjoy star shows in our mini-planetarium all event long! Don’t forget to catch a longer star show at our Starry Nights, the first Thursday of every month starting in September!
