February 2022 Starry Night at Home: Citizen Science

Citizen Science Starry

Anyone can be a citizen scientist! All you need is time and curiosity. Explore how your family can help scientists make observations and collect data through three astronomy-based citizen science projects.

Citizen Science Project #1: Gravity Spy

Help scientists at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) search for gravitational waves! Classify glitches so that scientists can better understand these ripples in spacetime.

Citizen Science Project #2: Galaxy Zoo

Observe telescope images of far-away galaxies and classify them based on their shapes. Help scientists discover what galaxies can tell us about the formation–and future–of the Universe.

Citizen Science Project #3: NASA’s GLOBE Cloud Challenge

Help climate scientists by making cloud observations with the GLOBE Observer app. Or, participate from the comfort of your home as you identify cloud types through the NASA GLOBE CLOUD GAZE online citizen science project!

H-E-B Free First Sunday: Deep in the Heart of STEM

H-E-B Free First Sunday
Deep in the Heart of STEM

Dive into the heart of Texas with Girlstart in partnership with the Bullock Museum. Explore the connections between history and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through interactive demos and hands-on activities for kids of all ages.

Girlstart’s activities include:

– Reveal secret messages and explore the Mystery and Benevolence exhibit
– Investigate how creatures soar as you design an amazing bird glider
– Mix up a bouncy ball and learn about the science of polymers and plastics
– Play a tiny handmade piano as you experience acoustics and the ACL Theater installation

Enjoy FREE exhibition admission all day during H-E-B Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state.

We encourage you to visit the Bullock Museum website for the latest COVID-19 safety protocols.
